Allergic Reaction To Niacinamide? Here’s What You Can Do About It

If you’re part of the 1% that gets closed comedones or irritation when trying out any product with Niacinamide – I’m right there with you. I wanted it to work SO bad that I bought The Ordinary’s Niacinamide, tried it, broke out, gave it away, bought it AGAIN and prayed to the skincare Gods that it would work this time. Spoiler Alert: it didn’t.

In case you haven’t heard of this highly acclaimed skincare holy grail for many, you probably have heard of Vitamin B3, which is a form of Niacinamide. It is used to treat almost every skincare concern imaginable. From uneven skintone, to wrinkles, dullness, hyperpigmentation – what can’t it do? (other than work for me, but anyway).

Niacinamide comes in moisturizers, toners, serums, creams and much more. You can use it with retinols, BHA’s, AHA’s, and almost every other type of product (except Vitamin C!)

So you’re allergic to Niacinamide….now what?

Niacinamide seems like a cure all in one bottle, but the good and almost obvious news is that you can find products that treat the same concerns.

Dehydrated skin: your number one priority is to hydrate hydrate HYDRATE! Hyaluronic acid is a great way to incorporate some extra hydration into your skin. A lot of products contain this ingredient, but you can also buy a bottle of it. It’s lighter than a serum, so I recommend applying it after your toner and before your serum.

Hyperpigmentation: dark spots take around 3 months to start clearing up, so using the right products is essential. Vitamin C inhibits melanin production and notably lightens and fades pigmentation. I also recommend trying out hair skin and nails vitamins, most of which contain Vitamin C & E and Biotin.

Dullness: if I could only use one product during my night skincare routine it would be rosehip oil. Every day I wake up with glowing, clear and even toned skin that I swear this is magic in a bottle. If there is just ONE thing I think everyone should incorporate into their routine it’s this. Make sure you look at the ingredients before purchasing to make sure rosehip oil is the only ingredient. I apply this as the last step of my night time routine.

If trying Niacinamide for the first time, remember to patch test! I prefer patch testing on the nape of my neck or under my chin because if I do have a bad reaction, at least it’s not on my face and I can always hide it with my hair.
